Don’t miss this “Project Bag” SOS. Make a bag to store the projects you are working on: convenient, pretty bags with a clear vinyl front.
PQG member Allison Owens will show us how to make the bag using an easy zipper technique.
Be sure to sign up soon---space is limited to 16 so that everyone has ample sewing space. You know there's at least one bag that you want---or get a head start on your donations to the 2026 Quilt Show Boutique.
    Supply List
    1.
Fabric for back and inside front about 20 inch pieces for: back (maybe use orphan blocks!), for inside (a light color fabric works best) and for batting. These will be quilted together and finished to 19 x 19 inch square. Note you can use double sided quilted fabric instead.
    2.
For front top and bottom edge: two 4 x 19 inch coordinating quilted pieces. Use a third piece if you want zipper encased in fabric rather than next to vinyl
    3. One 18-inch coordinating zipper.
    4.
Binding to go around entire bag.
    5. Optional: 14-inch handle to coordinate

Judy Walker made this bag from raggedy old jeans that her husband was finally ready to part with. It’s such an easy tote bag—most of the cutting and joining is already done. And clever finishing offers all the features you would want in a bag: handles, pockets, loops to attach your keys—easy-peasy! Bring any old pair of jeans—the bigger, the better—in no time at all, you’ll have a new tote bag.
If you don’t have jeans, don’t worry. With a few adaptations and a little more cutting, you can make a similar bag from just about anything that is heavy-duty fabric (pre-quilted prints, canvas, corduroy, denim, upholstery fabrics) — in about the same amount of time!
Based on the size you want and how much fabric you have, there's an easy to make your bag just the right sizee. We won’t use patterns—we will use math! We will use the simple free instructions found at this link:
              https://sarkirsten.com/blog/2024/7/27/tote-bag-calculator
              • 45in fabric, bring 1.5yd–2yd.           • For 54in fabric, bring 1yd–1.5yd
So, bring an old pair of jeans and/or fabric of your choice and go home with a brand new bag! There will be limited jeans for the taking, plus lots of denim, upholstery fabrics and other mics. heavy fabric, perfect for tote bags. Some for the taking and some for very low prices.
PQG provides irons and ironing boards, cutting mats, rulers, and a couple of cutters.

Carol Marszalek will teach this beginner's introduction on how to make an easy Mariner's Compass block. There are many ways to make compass blocks: hand drafted, plastic template, ruler templates, foundation paper piecing, or freezer paper.
The technique we will be learning is folded paper piecing. You save money by re-using the paper pattern again and again. You save time because you won't be ripping out the paper pattern.
We will not get into color theory, drafting, or y-seams in this class.

At the end of the class, hopefully you will have a complete block finished. It can become a mini, you can make a couple more to do a table runner, or perhaps the start of a full size quilt.

    Supply List
You will need to bring seven different fabrics to make the points: 3 light and 3 dark to make 3 sets of contrasting pairs plus one fabric for the background.
Fat quarters of each should be ample. Tip: Ahead of the class, plan which fabric you will use for each group of points. (In photo above, points are red, green, beige; bkgd is black.)
Pattern and written instructions will be provided. Bring a small cutting mat, a rotary cutter, and a 6- or 12-inch ruler to speed up your progress. Obviously, bring your sewing machine, extension cord, and accessories needed for accurate piecing. A small thin ruler to speed up your folds (we will provide lightweight cardboard strips).
You're welcome to bring a small iron and ironing mat to use at your table.

    Best regards,
    Judy Walker, SOS Chair

Create vibrant, fluid pattern in this small quilt. Twenty pre-cut strips are sewn into strata and then cut into segments. Pattern emerges as you manipulate the strips into a design that pleases your eye. No mathematical grid to follow!  No pattern required. You are the designer!

You will be introduced to the principles of bargello, learn to make your jelly roll strips flow smoothly, and sew the stratas together. These strata will be sub cut and the designing begins!  Tips on perfect intersections, pressing, quilting options, and border treatments also included.

    Supply List:

Sewing machine in good working order

Basic Sewing Supplies including seam ripper and straight pins

Medium Sized cutting mat/rotary cutter with new blade

Large square ruler to square up your piece before adding borders.

Stripology XL ruler (optional, but what a joy to use!)

    Neutral thread

Your own design wall (piece of fleece or batting about 45” wide or a flannel-backed tablecloth) with tape

Wooden pressing stick for pressing seams open (required!)

    Fine tip sharpie

    Fabric Requirements:

20 WOF strips cut 2.5” wide (I would recommend purchasing a jelly roll.  It gives more options to work with a color flow, share with others in class, or you could potentially make two quilts with it.)

¼ yard:  Inner Border or flange.  This fabric needs to “stop” the motion of the bargello, so needs to be a solid or texture, not a print.

½ yard:  Second Border (a bridge between borders)

1 ½ yards:  Outer border (this is enough to also include binding) Not too busy, but can be a fabric from the same line of your jelly roll.

1/2 yard for different fabric binding (optional)

    3 yards backing

    PQG Members - $55.00
