"The purpose of the Guild shall be to stimulate an interest in quilts, to promote and advance the art of quilt making, and to conduct educational programs and provide services in the design and techniques of quilt making."
Listed below are some of the ways PQG promotes the art of quilt making in the community.
PQG members make and distribute quilts to designated community charity organizations. Members of all skill levels are encouraged to participate.
The Education Committee is an outreach program to enhance knowledge of quilting in the community. Programs may include presentations to school children or working with senior citizens and/or other community groups to foster the love of quilting. PQG now offers beginning quilting classes in conjunction with Escambia County Libraries.

Programs will be presented by PQG members. A demonstration of how a quilt is layered and a story related to quilting will be included in each program. An age-appropriate blackline master-drawing will be provided to teachers so that students may color their own quilt designs. Books include:
The Boy and the Quilt by Shirley Kurtz tells the story of a family joyfully going through the steps of creating a quilt. (Preschool-Kindergarten.
The Quilt Story by Tony Johnston and Tomie dePaola tells the story of how a quilt provides comfort to a young girl as the family moves westward. The quilt languishes in an attic for decades until it is rediscovered by a child of the modern era. Grade 1.
The Patchwork Quilt by Valerie Flournoy tells the story of a grandmother and granddaughter creating a quilt from the family's clothing with each piece telling its own story. When grandmother is unable to finish the quilt, the family completes it for her. Grades 1-2.
The Quiltmakers Gift by Jeff Brumbeau and Gail de Marcken tells the story of a greedy king who wants a quilt made by an old woman who tells him that she will only make him a quilt when he has given away his many possessions. Through the giving away of his treasures, the king learns the joy of giving; and the old woman finally makes him a quilt. Over a dozen different quilts are depicted in the illustrations. Grades 1-3.
The Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco tells the story of a young girl and her family who emigrate from Russia to America. In America, they create a quilt with fabrics and symbols that remind them of home. The quilt is used for family celebrations for six generations. Grades 2-4.
The Quiltmaker's Journey by Jeff Brumbeau and Gail de Marcken uses quilts to show the value of generosity and the spirit of community as a brave young girl leaves her village in search of happiness and learns that there is joy in giving. Over a dozen different quilts are featured in the illustrations. Grades 3-4.
Sew Sister - The Untold Story of Jean Wright and NASA's Seamstresses by Elise Matich. This story tells how quilting skills were used to protet the space shuttles, and how the astronauts' learned from the womens' work how to save a space mission. Grades 3-4.

The Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival is held each year in Downtown Pensacola’s Historic Seville Square. PQG often participates in this local event held the first full weekend in November. The PQG booth may exhibit some of the award winning quilts from a recent PQG Quilt Show, have quilted items for sale by members, or provide demonstrations of quilting techniques.
PQG sponsors a judged quilt show which is open to the public showcasing quilts made by current PQG members. The Quilt Show is a biennial event held in odd numbered years (i.e. 2023, 2025). Judging is provided by a member of the National Association of Certified Quilt Judges (NACQJ). Ribbons are awarded in a variety of categories including - Best of Show, Viewer's Choice, Judge's Choice and the Meticulous Workmanship Award.
2023 Quilt Show
The Opportunity Quilt is designed, sewn and quilted by PQG members. Tickets are sold to the public for an "opportunity" to win the quilt through a raffle drawing at the conclusion of the Quilt Show. Tickets may be purchased from any PQG member. The Quilt can be seen throughout the community during the months preceding the quilt show.
On November 10, 2022 PQG held its first Mini Quilt Auction. The auction was open to the public to bid on and win any of the 75-plus pieces of original artwork made by our members. This quilt auction was a fund-raiser for our guild and Sleep in Heavenly Peace, the chosen non-profit agency recipient. The Guild plans to host the 2nd quilt auction in the fall of 2024.
