Carol Marszalek will teach this beginner's introduction on how to make an easy Mariner's Compass block. There are many ways to make compass blocks: hand drafted, plastic template, ruler templates, foundation paper piecing, or freezer paper.
The technique we will be learning is folded paper piecing. You save money by re-using the paper pattern again and again. You save time because you won't be ripping out the paper pattern.
We will not get into color theory, drafting, or y-seams in this class.

At the end of the class, hopefully you will have a complete block finished. It can become a mini, you can make a couple more to do a table runner, or perhaps the start of a full size quilt.

Supply List
You will need to bring seven different fabrics to make the points: 3 light and 3 dark to make 3 sets of contrasting pairs plus one fabric for the background.
Fat quarters of each should be ample. Tip: Ahead of the class, plan which fabric you will use for each group of points. (In photo above, points are red, green, beige; bkgd is black.)
Pattern and written instructions will be provided. Bring a small cutting mat, a rotary cutter, and a 6- or 12-inch ruler to speed up your progress. Obviously, bring your sewing machine, extension cord, and accessories needed for accurate piecing. A small thin ruler to speed up your folds (we will provide lightweight cardboard strips).
You're welcome to bring a small iron and ironing mat to use at your table.

Best regards,
Judy Walker, SOS Chair

PQG provides irons and ironing boards, cutting mats, rulers, and a couple of rotary cutters.
The bank is on the north side of Creighton, just east of Davis Highway. Plenty of parking behind the bank; turn right after you enter the bank parking lot and drive around to the north side of the building. Enter from the back of the building, not the front.
Bring a snack or lunch plus whatever beverage you choose. There's no access to a kitchen or fridge. There are fast-food choices nearby but who wants to drive somewhere—and miss out on more sewing!
